A few first points and pointers

There are some initial considerations when building or buying a website. It helps to spend a few moments planning and thinking ahead at the beginning because there can be real trouble later if you need or want to change main elements of the site.  So here are my initial planning questions:

  • Who is your audience? When you have the site up and running, who do you want to visit?  Sites can be for friends and family, potential customers, club members/enthusiasts/fans, or just anyone with a common interest.
  • What do you want them to see?  In other words, what do you want the site to do?  What is its purpose? You can give information, sell information, advertise products or services, or just tell the world about yourself, your favorite things or even your dog/s.
  • How deep or how wide? Most sites become more complex with each additional layer.  This site, for example, is a simple 4 tier site.  At the moment it has 1 Index page leading to 4 areas with 7 subjects and 3 specific pages.  Take a look at the site map - to view the structure.
  • What is the content of the site? Write a paragraph which puts it in a ‘nutshell’.  This should be the sort of text that would be on your front (or index) page to tell visitors what to expect. It will also be used as the hidden text which will be used by search engines when your site is found.
  • Write a list of ‘KEYWORDS’. What word or words would a potential visitor to your site use when ‘searching’ the www? These will help later when publicising the site and focus your mind on what is important.
  • If all else fails - buy a good HTML editor (one that shows ‘What you see  what you get - WYSIWYG)  or send me your ideas by email and I’ll give you a free consultation and if you wish, a price:

1 for a basic site template

2 for a fully working site to your specifications using your material (copy) via email.

3 as 2 plus posting, submitting and maintaining the finished site using your existing or new service provider.
